After several months of development and testing, Volkswagen officially unveiled the updated ID.R racing car, which will try to set a new lap record for electric vehicles at the legendary “North Loop” at the Nürburgring.
Since the Nürburgring is very different from the Pikes Peak highway, where ID.R was previously introduced, the company's designers and engineers made significant changes to the car, including the new aerodynamics package, which allows it to develop a higher speed.
According to Francois-Xavier Dmaison, technical director of Volkswagen Motorsport, ID.R will need to move at an average speed of over 180 km / h, and in some areas a racing car will reach 270 km / h.
In addition to the new package of aerodynamics, which includes some of the know-how of Formula 1, ID.R also revised the power plant, which was specially adapted for Nurburgring. In particular, the energy management system, which controls the power of the electric motors and the regenerative braking system, has been optimized.
Powerplant ID.R produces a combined power of 671 hp and 650 Nm of torque, accelerating a four-wheel drive car to 100 km / h in just 2.25 seconds and a maximum speed of 270 km / h.
Note that the current lap record among electric cars on the Nurburgring belongs to the NIO EP9 model, it was set in 2017 and is 6 minutes 45.90 seconds.
