Tesla is planning to upgrade the powertrain for the Model S and Model X and has already begun to include links to new engines for these models in the latest software updates.
In contrast to the current Model S and X, where Tesla has been using asynchronous AC motors for many years, the new electric motors codenamed “Raven” are permanent magnet motors, similar to those already used in Model 3.

Tesla Chief Designer Konstantinos Laskaris (Konstantinos Laskaris) explained the transition to new engines by the fact that electric cars with permanent magnets have an advantage in efficiency. The efficiency of the Model 3 electric motor is 97%, while the Model S and X engines only reach 93%.

Upgrading engines can increase the range of up to several tens of km compared with current figures.
However, the timing of updating the electric motors for models is not yet completely clear, but it will probably happen fairly quickly, plus transmission changes may go along with other hardware updates that will increase the charging speed of Model S and Model X.
